What are your superpowers?

Last week, I was working with a coaching client to help her identify her superpowers. People often use the term “superpowers” to mean “things you’re really good at,” but superpowers are so much more than that. Your superpowers are the things that light you up, the things that make you tick. Superpowers are the things that you excel at that also align with your core values.

Although superpowers will show up in all areas of your life, they can be especially useful in professional settings. Being able to name and describe your superpowers can provide a great amount of clarity, particularly during career transitions or while navigating other changes.

So how can you identify your superpowers? Try asking yourself the following questions:

  • What qualities about yourself are you most proud of?

  • What skills come naturally for you?

  • What are the things that you can do easily that other people find more difficult?

  • What things are you good at that feel rooted in your values?

  • What leads you to get into a flow state, where you’re so focused on a task that you lose track of time?

Something that’s unique about superpowers is that they can either be beneficial or detrimental depending on the context and how you use it (just like Superman’s powers cause him problems before he knows how to fully harness them!). If there’s something that you excel at, but can sometimes get you into hot water, that’s a good sign that it might be one of your superpowers.

As an example, one of my superpowers is learning by doing, which shows up as me enjoying figuring things out on my own. Learning by doing aligns with my core values of independence, curiosity, and exploration. This superpower serves me well in new contexts as I can navigate new challenges with minimal guidance, but it can also lead me to spend too much time getting into the details of something in a way that’s not actually useful.
